Lesson learned- “Live in the moment”. PC-AKS (Author)

Don’t you think that our lives will be much easier and smooth if we are in the moment always?

If you are studying, be in the moment and study thoroughly, and give your all without being distracted. When you’re with someone, you give them your undivided attention, respecting both their and your time, rather than being preoccupied with business phone calls. Like this, you get to enjoy every bit of that moment.

We all have a tendency to live in the past or the future. We are busy measuring and comparing things with our past or the future. How often do you find yourself thinking about what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow?

Living in the moment comes by practice and once you have learned to live this way, you will appreciate and enjoy every second of your life. Here are a few suggestions from my life that have helped me to be in the moment and relish every second as if it was my last.

Be grateful for what you have

Always be grateful for the life that you have. If you are a believer in the existence of the almighty, thank him for the wonderful life that you have now in the present, not in the past or in the future.

Instead of focusing on things that you don't have, appreciate the things that you have and be grateful for them. Maybe you haven’t seen the life around you. Go and have a look and you will realize that there are people with almost nothing in their lives but still, there is a smile on their faces and they are satisfied with their lives. And here are we, with all the luxuries and still complaining and comparing.

Acceptance is the key

Acceptance is the key to many problems in our lives. To be in the moment you need to start accepting people and things the way they are. In this life of yours, there are many variables and not everything can be controlled by you and not everything can be done the way you want it to be done. Leave some scope for miracles to happen in life.

Start practicing acceptance and you will realize how easy it is to let go of things that are out of control and that are not meant for you. My short experience with Indian Air Force has taught me that.

You give your best and even then things happen that are out of your control, you do not have a choice but to accept it and move on.

Your company matters

In your life, you will be facing people with various types of attitudes and mindsets, but surround yourself with only those who have a positive approach towards life and who see good in others. The good company of these people will make it easier for you to live in the present and enjoy every moment.

Living in good company doesn’t mean that you will start ignoring the world around you. But instead, face the world and surround yourself with the things that make you feel good.

Show random acts of kindness

One way to be in the moment is by observing your surroundings and noticing things around you. How often have you done that in the past? How often do you take out time to notice the changes around you?

Show kindness to every human being. That will surely give you satisfaction and happiness and you can be in the moment. The next time you see someone struggling with something like studies, help him/her out. An elderly lady trying to cross the road or your friend going through a rough phase, be there for them and help them out. Look for ways to show kindness to others. Your random act of kindness may brighten someone's day. Your smile or just a nod may change the course of people’s lives in a good way and keep you focused on the present.

Your every act is leaving a mark in the sands of time. Now it is your choice on how you want to be remembered.
